Freshers vs. experienced — two very different resumes

If you're a fresher, your resume needs to work for campus placement drives and portals like TCS NQT/iBegin, Infosys InfyTQ, and Wipro's Elite National Talent Hunt or WASE program. With no work history to lean on, projects and internships carry the most weight — list your best 2–3 projects with the tech stack and outcome, not just the title. Include CGPA only if it's 7.0 or above. Keep it to exactly one page, and optimize your Naukri profile the same way, since recruiters search Naukri's own database independently of any company ATS.

If you're experienced, the resume shifts to reverse-chronological with quantified achievements — "Reduced deployment cycle by 30%" beats a duty description every time. Indian recruiters commonly expect a notice period line and sometimes current/expected CTC, even though CTC increasingly belongs in the application form rather than the resume itself. Career gaps are still scrutinized more heavily in India than in many other markets, so a one-line explanation is worth including rather than leaving a gap unexplained. One page works up to around 8 years of experience; two pages becomes acceptable for senior and leadership roles.

Indian ATS quirks you need to know

TCS iBegin parses strictly — avoid tables, columns, and multi-section headers entirely, or entire blocks of your resume can silently disappear from what the recruiter sees. Infosys's portal generally prefers a PDF upload over DOCX, while Wipro's WILP and Elite hiring systems are similarly sensitive to non-standard formatting.

Separately, Naukri runs its own keyword-matching and resume-display algorithm independent of any individual company's ATS — this affects how visible you are when a recruiter searches Naukri's database directly, so it's worth optimizing your Naukri-hosted resume with the same keyword discipline you'd use for a job application.

On the photo question: traditional Indian resumes often included one, and some government, PSU, or older-style employers still expect it. Most modern, ATS-driven employers — particularly product companies and startups — now discourage it, since photos aren't parsed by ATS software and can introduce unconscious bias. The same goes for date of birth, marital status, and religion fields — once standard, now increasingly considered unnecessary and best left off unless a specific application explicitly asks for them.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include a photo on my resume in India?

It depends on the employer. Traditional Indian resumes often included a photo, and some government, PSU, or older-style companies still expect one. But most modern ATS-savvy employers — especially product companies and startups — now discourage it: a photo isn't parsed by ATS software anyway, and it can invite unconscious bias. When in doubt, leave it off for private-sector and IT roles.

One page or two for an Indian resume?

One page for freshers and anyone under about 8 years of experience. Beyond that, two pages is acceptable for senior or leadership roles. Recruiters at high-volume companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro screen hundreds of resumes a day — a tight, relevant one-pager gets read; a padded three-pager often doesn't.

How do I explain a career gap on an Indian resume?

Be brief and factual — a short line like "Career break for family responsibilities" or "Upskilling in [skill] during transition" is enough. Career gaps are still scrutinized more heavily by Indian recruiters than in some other markets, so don't leave a gap unexplained; a one-line reason removes the question mark without inviting more.

Is there a difference between a resume for a service company and a product company?

Yes. Service companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant) generally screen for technology keywords, certifications, and client-facing project experience — their ATS is often strict about exact keyword matches. Product companies and startups (Flipkart, Google India, most startups) weight impact and outcomes more heavily — quantified achievements and specific technical depth matter more than keyword density.

Do I need to mention CGPA or percentage?

Only if it's strong — generally 7.0+ CGPA or 70%+ marks. If it's below that, it's fine to leave it off entirely once you have any work experience or strong projects to show instead. For freshers with no other track record, most recruiters still expect to see it.
