How to Write a Software Engineer Resume That Gets Interviews

8 min read·June 5, 2026

The tech job market is competitive. Here's exactly what to put on your software engineer resume — and how to make it stand out.

The Right Structure for a Software Engineer Resume

  1. Contact Information — name, email, phone, LinkedIn, GitHub, portfolio
  2. Professional Summary — 2–3 lines highlighting your stack and experience
  3. Technical Skills — languages, frameworks, tools, databases
  4. Work Experience — with quantified achievements
  5. Projects — especially important for freshers
  6. Education — degree, college, CGPA
  7. Certifications — cloud, security, or other relevant certs

1. Contact Information — Include GitHub

For software engineers, GitHub is as important as LinkedIn. Make sure to include:

  • Email (professional — not cooldev123@gmail.com)
  • LinkedIn profile URL
  • GitHub profile URL
  • Portfolio or personal website (if you have one)
  • Location (city, country — no full address needed)

2. Write a Strong Technical Summary

Keep it 2–3 sentences. Mention your years of experience, primary stack, and what you're looking for.

"Full-stack developer with 3 years of experience building scalable web applications using React, Node.js, and PostgreSQL. Passionate about clean code, performance optimization, and delivering products that users love. Looking for a senior developer role at a product-focused company."

3. Technical Skills — Be Specific

Organize your skills into categories. Recruiters and ATS systems scan this section first.

Languages: JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java

Frontend: React.js, Next.js, Tailwind CSS, Redux

Backend: Node.js, Express, REST APIs, GraphQL

Databases: PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis

Cloud & DevOps: AWS, Docker, CI/CD, GitHub Actions

Tools: Git, Jira, Figma, Postman

Important: Only list skills you can genuinely discuss in an interview.

4. Work Experience — Quantify Everything

This is the most important section. Every bullet point should answer: "So what?"

Weak: "Worked on the backend API"
Strong: "Redesigned REST API architecture reducing response time by 40% and supporting 10x more concurrent users"

Use this formula for each bullet:

[Action verb] + [what you did] + [result/impact with numbers]

Best action verbs for engineers: Built, Designed, Optimized, Reduced, Implemented, Migrated, Automated, Deployed, Scaled, Led

5. Projects — Your Portfolio on Your Resume

Include 2–3 of your best projects. For each one:

  • Name + 1-line description
  • Tech stack used
  • Impact or scale (users, performance, etc.)
  • GitHub link

6. Common Mistakes Software Engineers Make

  • ❌ Listing every technology you've ever touched
  • ❌ No quantified results — just responsibilities
  • ❌ GitHub profile is empty or has no README files
  • ❌ Resume is longer than 2 pages (1 page for <5 years experience)
  • ❌ Using a fancy two-column template that confuses ATS
  • ❌ No summary — jumping straight into experience
  • ❌ Generic bullet points that could apply to anyone

7. Tailor Your Resume for Each Job

Don't send the same resume to every company. Read the job description and adjust:

  • Add keywords from the JD to your skills and experience
  • Reorder your skills to match what they prioritize
  • Adjust your summary to mention their specific tech stack

ResumeOrbitz's Job Tailor feature does this automatically — paste the JD and it rewrites your resume to match.
